Rehabilitation and extension of the ports of Vale de Cavaleiros and Furna / Cape Verde
Port Vale de Cavaleiros
Port Vale de Cavaleiros
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
Under this project the ports of Vale de Cavaleiros (Fogo Island) and Furna (Brava Island) were rehabilitated and extended in line with the future demand. To this end, new berths for conventional and Ro/Ro vessels were built. In Vale de Cavaleiros the breakwater which was partly destroyed by several storms was rehabilitated, extended and provided with a protection composed of 12.5-tonne Coreloc® elements, a new type of armour units which are much lighter than conventional armour units. The existing infrastructure was improved by building new roads, parking and storage areas, waiting halls, fencing etc. The design work included extensive field investigations, statistical wave analyses and model tests to find the optimum breakwater design.
