Rehabilitation of the Elbe river protection dam / Germany
Elbe river protection dam in Axien-Mauken
Elbe river protection dam in Axien-Mauken
DESCPRIPTION OF PROJECT
After the 2002 flood event, several dam sections on the Elbe River between Axien and Mauken, Iserbegka and Gallin as well as in Gorsdorf and Hohndorf were rehabilitated extensively and several bank sluices were reconstructed within the scope of the flood protection programmes of the Land of Saxony-Anhalt.

During the 2002 floods, the abovementioned dam sections showed enormous weaknesses. Water levels often reached the dam crowns and partly overflowed these with the result of water and material escaping through the dam including its bottom part. In case of a dam failure, big parts of the adjacent land would be flooded up to a height of 2.5 - 3.0 m above ground level.

The consulting services included measures to improve the stability of the future flood protection constructions on a length of 9 km, the complete reconstruction of the bank sluices as well as the construction of the landward dam service roads, which had to be integrated into the cross-national Elbe River cycle track network. Before the beginning of the design works, geotechnical investigations according to DIN 19712 and DVWK 210 as well as survey works had to be realised, which were co-ordinated by Fichtner WT.
